A very popular and well made boot that is both high protection specification and comfortable, the only downside is the design of the external ankle protector that squeaks while walking

Higher level road and race boots

Initial Thoughts

Alpinestars are a name synonymous with quality road and race motorcycle wear so I was excited to be reviewing these boots and as usual they were going to be put to the test in the real world. At first glance they are stunning to look at, every bit the bling you would expect from such a high priced boot, finish looks great and the list of technobabble is enough to reassure most buyers. What struck me initially was the comfort of them, after testing the Sidi Vertigo's and finding them a tight fit I was pleasantly surprised.

Construction

Sporting a nice long list of technology the SMX-PLUS appear a well constructed boot, with a Lorica and leather upper they are not flimsy or tough but a nice compromise, the sliders are removable so when you invariably wear them down you can give them a nice new set. The inner boot is a nice comfortable fit, very comfortable indeed even for general walking, fastening them up is courtesy of a Kevlar constructed lace on the inner boot and then an external zip, these are a nice place to be.

Walking around in the boots does throw up a very annoying gremlin though, because of the external ankle armour the boots rub slightly on the plastic and create a very irritating squeak, no doubt if you are just wearing these for track days you will easily be able to blank this out but in the real world of walking around it gets very annoying and also embarrassing in places. To try and counteract the squeaking I have tried a number of lotions, sprays and other related gunks to reduce the friction - all to no avail. This is the single criticism I have for the boots and in my opinion is a major let down on what would be a killer choice for everybody.

  • Wide and ventilated heel counter extends to the ankles and is combined with a shock absorbing padded insert and self-molding foam ankle protectors.

  • Injected PU material extended to the to area.
  • Large instep flex zone for maximum comfort and flexibility.
  • Lorica and leather upper.

Conclusion

Put simply, these are a fantastic boot when on your bike, the level of protection is incredible and the comfort is among the best I have ever tried.

In terms of value I guess they are about on the money for the level of the boot but are paying a premium for the Alpinestars brand - nonetheless you get a high quality product in return for your investment and a boot you can rely on for a good number of years.

The only blemish on these near perfect boots is the squeak caused by the ankle armour which I am afraid does get annoying if you are out in a crowded place - I do my shopping on the bike so walking round a supermarket in them is very embarrasing.

The squeak however is just not a big enough gremlin to warrant the SMX-PLUS boots dropping any kudos in the review as they more than make up for it in every other area but they do lose a star as the problem could have been better thought out in the design.
